Renowned Queensland co-tourism resort O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat recently partnered with Queensland based company EcoNova, to cut water consumption by 85% per guest as part of a water conservation initiative for the resort's 48 villa expansion programme.
The resort retreat, catering to almost 41,000 guests and 300,000 day visitors each year, is surrounded by World Heritage listed Lamington National Park, obviously an extremely sensitive environment.
EcoNova's “NovaClear” water treatment system is treating up to 110 kL or 40,150 kL per annum (or the equivalent of 31 Olympic sized swimming pools) of grey and black water to Class A+ water, the highest quality of water recognized by the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency.
The resort had already cut water consumption through a range of measures such as water efficient taps and toilets and water-saving practices but now utilises EcoNova's Class A+ recycled water for toilet flushing, laundry and outdoor use.

This equates to a saving of over 85% of water consumption per guest, despite doubling the number of guests. Due to the quality and purity of the end product, excess recycled water is discharged directly into the surrounding environment.
O'Reilly's Managing Director, Shane O'Reilly agreed that the new water recycling plant ensured that O'Reilly's stayed at the forefront of best practice eco-tourism.
